Question by Bright Eyes: What type of discharge does “fraudulent enlistment” USUALLY get you?
My recruiter told me straight up that he recommended that I leave information out on my MEPS medical application about a short period of time where I saw a psychiatrist and took medication for “depression”. I was doing that for less than a year and got the clear from my psychiatrist that I was mentally fit to be in the army. My condition was that of a teenage kid in high school. It wasn’t serious.
However, me and my recruiter felt that even with the clear from the doctor, if I did tell MEPS, I would not be accepted into the army.
He told me that MEPS would try to scare me into spitting up information and that I would get “dishonorable discharge”, prison time, etc if I was found out later. He was right- MEPS did tell me these things. However, he also told me that is is unrealistic for a “fraudulent enlistment” case to end up as a “dishonorable discharge” and that if I DID end up in a “fraudulent enlistment” situation, I would probably get a “General Under Honorable Conditions discharge.”
Apparently, as long as no depression “resurfaces” to make the Army think that it is a previous condition, there is no reason my civilian records would be checked out to that extent.
Is all this true?
With that said, I know that if I do caught, it isn’t my recruiter’s fault. It’s mine. I’m am honest person at heart and it bothers me to have to lie to get where I want to get. However, I feel it is a necessary chance I have to take.

There are many type of depression:
DSM-IV and ICD-10
Primary versus secondary depression
Unipolar versus bipolar depression
Depressive illness versus depressive symptoms
Dysthymia (chronic mild depression) versus depressive illness
and of course the atypical one.
For more info read http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/depression/classification_000001.htm
I think your’s is temporary mild depression caused by hormonal imbalance, typical during adolescence. Normally it will be gone when your hormone settles down.
Since everything you do will affect your future, it is important not to “entertain” your depression. Most of teenagers find it difficult to handle it themselves, that they turn to others for support.
The best option is the one who had this experience before, who really cares for you, and has good interest on you; usually our mothers / parents. But it could be our sister, aunt, teacher, pastor, etc. Don’t look for it from your friends, they are having the same problem. It will be like a blind guiding a blind.
Good luck
